Janice Bonsu (Still Water) was born in Brooklyn in 1984, and is the child of Ghanian immigrants. Janice Bonsu started writing poetry at the age of ten as an outlet to express her emotions. Janice took a break from writing to study fine arts in high school. During her undergraduate years, she found her way back to poetry in order to find an escape from the pressure of college life and being away from home. Janice began to perform her poetry at many college functions, talent shows, and even helped to start an ongoing event at her school regarding poetry. When she graduated from college, she found her life was at a standstill. Janice was unable to obtain employment while everyone around her seemed to have their lives on track. Because of her difficulty with trying to start her life- again, she began to write. At a time in her life that was supposed to be very happy, she found herself in a state of uncertainty due to her lack of employment and substantial college loan debt. Unable to take her education to the next level, she started to write. This time, she did not turn to writing as an escape but found it was her calling.
